Crypto refers to cryptosporidiosis which is a parasitic disease caused by cryptosporidium. That lives in the intestines of infected animals and humans. These crypto germs are released into the environment by a bowl movement from an infected animal or human. Millions of crypto germs can come from only one bowl movement. The outer shell of this parasite gives it the ability to live outside the body for long periods of time and also makes it very resistant to chlorine-based disinfectants.

How is it spread?
Crypto is spread when animals or humans comes in contact with soil, food, water or surfaces that have been contaminated with feces containing the parasite. Even if is no visible evidence of feces can be seen. You can become infected after accidentally swallowing the parasite. Crypto is not spread by contact with blood.

How common is Crypto?
Crypto has become recognized as one of the most common causes of waterborne disease in humans in the United States. The parasite is found in every region of the United States and throughout the world. Recreational water and insufficiently treated drinking water supplies could contain crypto.

 Jacuzzis
 Fountains
 Lakes
 Rivers
 Springs
 Ponds
 Streams
 Recreational water can be contaminated with sewage or feces from humans or animals.

How can I tell if I have been exposed?

If you are accidental exposed to cryptosporidiosis. Symptoms generally begin with in 2 to 10 days after becoming infected with the parasite.

Symptoms include:
 watery diarrhea
 Stomach cramps or pain
 Dehydration
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Fever
 Weight loss
 
How long do symptoms last?
People with healthy immune systems, symptoms usually last about 1 to 2 weeks. If you think you may be infected, talk to your health care provider.
